Mukhtaṣar al-ShamāʾilAl-Tirmidhi

267 – ʿAwf ibn Mālik relates: “I spent a night in the company of the Messenger of Allah. First he used the siwāk, then he performed ablution, and then he stood to pray, so I stood beside him. He began by reciting Sūrat al-Baqarah. Whenever he came across a verse that spoke of mercy, he would pause and ask for that mercy; and whenever he encountered a verse that mentioned punishment, he would pause and seek refuge.

After that he bowed, remaining in bowing for roughly the same length of time as his standing, and in his bowing he kept saying: ‘Subḥāna dhī l-jabarūt wa l-malakūt wa l-kibriyāʾ wa l-ʿaẓamah’ (Glorified is the Possessor of might, dominion, majesty, and greatness). He then prostrated for about the same duration as his bowing, and in his prostration he repeated: ‘Subḥāna dhī l-jabarūt wa l-malakūt wa l-kibriyāʾ wa l-ʿaẓamah.’

He next recited Sūrat Āl ʿImrān, and then continued with one sūrah after another, doing the same throughout.”
