about the daytime prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He said,
“You would not be able to keep up with it.”
We replied, “Whoever among us can manage it will pray.”
He then explained:
“When the sun is over here and has reached the same position it occupies over there at the time of ʿAṣr, he would perform two rakʿahs (units of prayer). When the sun is over here and has reached the same position it occupies over there at the time of Ẓuhr, he would perform four rakʿahs. He would pray four rakʿahs before Ẓuhr ⦗and he mentioned that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to offer them at the time of the sun’s zenith and would lengthen them⦘ ⦗289⦘, then two rakʿahs afterward, and before ʿAṣr four rakʿahs—separating every two rakʿahs with the salām, sending peace upon the angels who are near, the prophets, and those who follow them from among the believers and the Muslims.”
