that he performed the night prayer alongside the Prophet ﷺ. He said: When the Messenger of Allah commenced the prayer he proclaimed,
“Allāhu akbar dhū l-malakūt wa l-jabarūt wa l-kibriyāʾ wa l-ʿaẓama (Allah is the Most Great, Possessor of sovereignty, overwhelming power, majesty, and greatness).”

He then recited Sūrat al-Baqarah. After that he bowed, and his bowing lasted roughly as long as his standing, during which he kept saying, “Subḥāna rabbiyal-ʿaẓīm, subḥāna rabbiyal-ʿaẓīm (Glorified is my Lord, the Most Great; glorified is my Lord, the Most Great).”

Next he raised his head, and the standing that followed was about as long as his bowing, while he repeated, “Li-rabbī al-ḥamd, li-rabbī al-ḥamd (To my Lord belongs all praise; to my Lord belongs all praise).”

Then he prostrated, and his prostration was approximately as long as his standing, saying, “Subḥāna rabbiyal-aʿlā, subḥāna rabbiyal-aʿlā (Glorified is my Lord, the Most High; glorified is my Lord, the Most High).”

He raised his head again, and the sitting between the two prostrations lasted about as long as the prostration itself, during which he said, “Rabbi-ghfir lī, rabbi-ghfir lī (My Lord, forgive me; my Lord, forgive me).”

He continued in this manner until he had recited al-Baqarah, Āl ʿImrān, al-Nisāʾ, and either al-Māʾidah or al-Anʿām—Shuʿbah was the narrator who was uncertain whether it was al-Māʾidah or al-Anʿām. ⦗150⦘
