Ibn ʿAbbās reported that he once spent the night at the house of Maymūnah, his maternal aunt. He said:
“I lay crosswise at the foot of the pillow, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lay lengthwise upon it. He slept until the night was halfway through—or a little before that, or a little after—then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ awoke. He began wiping the sleep from his face and recited the last ten verses of Sūrah Āl ʿImrān. He then went to a hanging water-skin, performed his ablution from it, and perfected his ablution. After that he stood and prayed.

He prayed two rakʿahs, then two, then two, then two, then two, then two—Maʿn said: six times in all—after which he performed witr, then lay down.
(In another narration:) He slept until he breathed audibly, and whenever he slept he would breathe audibly ⦗255⦘, until the muʾadhdhin came to him. He then rose and prayed two light rakʿahs, then—⦗146⦘
