A man asked him, “Did you all flee from the Messenger of Allah, O Abū ʿUmārah?” He replied, “No, by Allah, the Messenger of Allah did not turn back; it was only the quicker ones among the people who did so when the Hawāzin met them with a shower of arrows. The Messenger of Allah was on his mule, while Abū Sufyān ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib held its bridle, and the Messenger of Allah was declaring:
“I am the Prophet—no falsehood in that;
I am the son of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib.”
