ʿAlī ibn Rabīʿah related:
I was present when ʿAlī (may Allah ennoble his face) was brought a riding animal. When he placed his foot in the stirrup he said, “Bismi-llāh (in the name of Allah).” Once he had settled on its back he said, “Al-ḥamdu li-llāh (all praise is due to Allah),” and then recited: “Subḥāna lladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa-mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn, wa-innā ilā rabbinā lamunqalibūn (Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us; we ourselves could never have controlled it, and surely to our Lord we shall all return).” He then said, “Al-ḥamdu li-llāh” three times and “Allāhu akbar” three times, after which he supplicated, “Subḥānaka innī ẓalamtu nafsī fa-ghfir lī fa-innahu lā yaghfiru l-dhunūba illā anta (Glory be to You; I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins but You).”
Thereupon he laughed. I asked, “What made you laugh, O Commander of the Believers?” He answered, “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do exactly as I have just done, and then he laughed. I therefore asked him, ‘What made you laugh, O Messenger of Allah?’ He replied, ‘Your Lord is amazed at His servant when he says, “My Lord, forgive my sins,” knowing that no one forgives sins except Him.’” [123]
