he went in. He bathed, then came out, and we set before him a platter containing bread and meat. When it was placed, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān began to weep. I said, “Abu Muhammad, what makes you cry?” He replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away without he and his family ever having their fill of barley bread; so I do not think that we have been spared until now for anything better than what has already passed.”

فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ وَأَتَيْنَا بِصَحْفَةٍ فِيهَا خُبْزٌ وَلَحْمٌ فَلَمَّا وُضِعَتْ بَكَى عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ. فَقُلْتُ: يَا أَبَا مُحَمَّدٍ مَا يُبْكِيكَ؟ فَقَالَ: هَلكَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ َ وَلَمْ يَشْبَعْ هُوَ وَأَهْلُ بَيْتِهِ مِنْ خُبْزِ الشَّعِيرِ فَلَا أَرَانَا أُخِّرْنَا لِمَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ لَنَا)
