and by al-Tabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (8/7645 and 25/295 / 48), and Ibn ʿAsākir in al-Tārīkh (1/611–614 / t).
I say: Al-Hāfiz said of Damrah ibn Rabīʿah:
“Truthful, though he makes occasional mistakes.”
ʿAtāʾ al-Khurāsānī also transmitted it from Yahyā through the same chain, except for the passage beginning:
“Then pray, and Jesus son of Mary will be a judge among my community…”
and continuing to the end of the hadith. Al-Hākim recorded it (4/536–537) and said:
“Authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.”
Al-Dhahabī concurred.
I say: This is an error on the part of both of them. Muslim did not record anything from ʿAmr al-Hadramī. As for ʿAtāʾ—namely, Ibn Abī Muslim al-Khurāsānī—although Muslim recorded reports from him, he frequently makes mistakes and obscures his sources in transmission. Here he narrated it using the formula “from,” without explicitly stating that he heard it. How, then, can its chain of transmission be authentic?
