Qissat al-Masih al-DajjalNasir al-Din al-Albani

For this reason, Muslims today must not abandon their efforts for Islam and the establishment of its state on earth while awaiting the appearance of the Mahdī and the descent of Jesus (peace and blessings be upon them both), whether out of despair or under the mistaken impression that this cannot be achieved before their coming. Such an assumption is false, and such despair is futile. Neither Allah Most High nor His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) has told us that Islam will neither return nor wield authority on earth except in their time. This may therefore come about before their coming if Muslims adopt the means necessary to achieve it, for Allah Most High says:

“If you support Allah, He will support you and make your feet firm.” [Muhammad: 7]

And He says:

“And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.” [al-Hajj: 40]

This misconception was among the strongest factors that led some teachers engaged in giving guidance, and some contemporary writers, to reject the hadiths concerning the Mahdī and Jesus (peace be upon them both)—despite their great number and mass transmission. They saw that those harbouring this misconception used these hadiths as an excuse to rely passively on them and abandon efforts to strengthen Islam! In doing so, they erred gravely in two respects:

First: They endorsed this misconception, considering its source to be the hadiths in question; otherwise, they would not have rushed to reject them!

Second: They did not know how they ought to address this misconception: by affirming the hadiths and refuting the erroneous understandings surrounding them. In this respect, they are no different from those who denied the doctrine of belief in divine decree, both good and bad, because some who believed in it understood it to entail compulsion, with the morally accountable person having neither agency nor choice. Since this understanding was self-evidently false, they hastened to reject it, but along with it they also rejected divine decree itself;
