It was recorded by al-Hākim (4/511), who said:
“Its chain of transmission is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.”
Al-Dhahabī rejected this, saying:
“I say: Certainly not! Saʿīd is under suspicion and utterly unreliable.”
I say: He means Saʿīd ibn Sinān al-Himsī.
Fourth: From Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays:
The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) came to see her about something he needed, then went out. She complained to him of her hardship, and he said:
“How will you fare when you are tested with a servant to whom the earth’s rivers and fruits have been subjected—one who feeds whoever follows him and leads him into disbelief, but deprives whoever disobeys him and denies him sustenance?”
She said: “O Messenger of Allah, when a girl sits at the oven for a while baking her bread, I almost lose concentration in my prayer. How, then, will we fare when that happens?”
He replied:
“Allah will protect the believers on that day through their glorification of Him, just as He has protected the angels. Between his eyes is written ‘Disbeliever,’ which every believer will read, whether literate or illiterate.”
Al-Haythamī (7/346) said:
“It was narrated by al-Tabarānī. Its chain includes an unnamed narrator, but the remaining narrators are among those cited in al-Sahīh.”
In sum, although the chain of this hadith of Abū Umāmah contains some weakness, this documentation and critical examination—of a kind rarely seen—has shown that most of its passages are authentic on the strength of the corroborating reports cited earlier for each passage.
