A ninth chain from him traces the following report back to the Prophet:
“The Hour will not come until the Romans encamp at al-Aʿmāq or Dābiq. An army from Medina, comprising some of the finest people on earth at that time, will march out against them. When they line up for battle, the Romans will say, ‘Let us fight those who took captives from among us.’ The Muslims will reply, ‘No, by Allah! We will not leave you to fight our brothers.’ They will then fight them. A third will flee, and Allah will never turn to them in forgiveness. A third will be killed—the finest martyrs in Allah’s sight—and the remaining third will be victorious and will never be put to trial. They will conquer Constantinople (in another version: ‘They will reach Constantinople and take spoils’).
And (in another chain from him: ‘Have you heard of a city with one side on land and the other in the sea?’) they replied, ‘Yes, Messenger of Allah.’
He said, ‘The Hour will not come until seventy thousand descendants of Isaac attack it. When they reach it, they will encamp without fighting with weapons or shooting an arrow. They will say, “None is worthy of worship but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.” Then one of its two sides—the one in the sea—will fall. They will say a second time, “None is worthy of worship but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest,” and its other side will fall. Then they will say a third time, “None is worthy of worship but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.” An opening will be made for them, and they will enter and take spoils.’
While they are dividing the spoils, having hung their swords on olive trees, Satan will cry out among them, ‘The Messiah [the Dajjāl] has gone to your families in your absence!’ They will set out, though this report will be false [and will leave everything behind and return]. When they reach Syria, he will emerge.
While they are preparing for battle and arranging their ranks, the call to commence prayer [the dawn prayer] will be given. Then Jesus son of Mary, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, will descend and lead them in prayer. When the enemy of Allah sees him, he will melt as does
