The First Part
Affirming the Pillars of Faith
As for the first part, it consists of faith in Allah—Mighty and Majestic—His angels, His Books, and His messengers, and affirming His revealed laws. No deed can avail when any part of this is lacking. It also entails holding fast to the Book of Allah, exalted is His majesty.
Memorizing the Quran and Acting upon It
You must persevere in memorizing and reciting it, constantly reflect upon its meanings and verses, obey its commands, and refrain from what it prohibits and warns against.
Holding Fast to the Book and the Sunnah
It is narrated that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “I have left among you that which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray after me: the Book of Allah Most High and my Sunnah. Hold fast to it with your molar teeth.”
Obedience to and Love for the Messenger
The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—gave us sincere counsel. He was merciful and compassionate toward the believers and sincerely sought their good. Therefore, act upon his counsel and accept his advice. Establish firmly within yourselves love for him, contentment with what he brought, adherence to his Sunnah, submission to him, obedience to his judgement, eagerness to learn his Sunnah, and commitment to following his path. Love for him leads to all that is good and delivers one from ruin and evil.
