Al-IstiqamaIbn Taimiya

Likewise, the same applies to someone who pledges allegiance to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, on the terms Allah has commanded. On this basis, the case of someone coerced into pledging allegiance to a ruler is assessed: is the coercion rightful or wrongful, and is he pledging allegiance on the terms Allah has commanded, or on other terms?

Some who follow their own desires may interpret these verses incorrectly. The Rāfidah, for example, interpret them as meaning that they alone are the believers and that everyone else is an unbeliever; they may therefore practise taqiyya (dissimulation) toward others. They hold false views concerning this matter that are beyond the scope of the present discussion.
