and so He, the Most High, said:
“Fear Allah as He should be feared.”
Surah Āl ʿImrān, 102
And He said:
“So fear Allah as much as you are able.”
Surah al-Taghābun, 16
It is authentically reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Leave me be so long as I leave you be. Those before you were destroyed only because of their excessive questioning and their disputes with their prophets. When I forbid you something, avoid it; and when I command you to do something, do as much of it as you can.”
Thus, he made obligatory only as much of what he commanded as one is able to do. Likewise, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said in another hadith:
“You will never fulfil—or be able to carry out—everything you have been commanded to do, but…”
And he said:
“This religion is easy, and no one overburdens himself in religion without being overwhelmed by it. So aim to do what is right, and come as close as you can. Seek help in the early morning, the late afternoon, and part of the night. Moderation, moderation—and you will reach your destination.”
