and grant him peace—to Mālik ibn al-Huwayrith and his companion, may Allah be pleased with them both: “When the time for prayer comes, give the adhān and the iqāmah, and let the older of you lead you both in prayer.” They were comparable in their proficiency in Quran recitation.

As for everyday affairs, it is reported in the Sunan that he said, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: “It is not permissible for three people to travel together without appointing one of them as their leader.”
