And Allah, glorified is He, prescribed in both the law of the people of the Torah and the law of the people of the Quran that an adulterer who has been married be stoned, just as Allah stoned those who committed indecency. As for those who commit indecency and sodomy, both participants are to be stoned, whether or not they have previously been married, according to the majority of scholars, just as Allah stoned the people of Lot. No sin is punishable by stoning except this indecency.
The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had more than one person stoned: the two Jews, Mā‘iz ibn Mālik, the Ghāmidī woman, and another man. His rightly guided caliphs likewise carried out stoning.
The same applies to the punishment Allah inflicts upon those who engage in such acts, as related by al-Bukhārī in his Sahīh in a report cited without its full chain of transmission, but with wording affirming its authenticity. It falls within the authentic material meeting his stipulated criteria. He relates from ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Ghanm al-Ash‘arī that he heard the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say:
“There will certainly be people among my community who deem unlawful sexual intercourse, silk, wine, and musical instruments lawful. Some people will settle beside a mountain. Someone will bring their grazing livestock back in the evening, coming to them to attend to their needs, but they will say, ‘Come back to us tomorrow.’ Then Allah will strike them by night
