If, then, it is clear that intoxication comprises two elements—one consisting in the presence of pleasure, the other in the absence of reason and discernment—we have already discussed pleasure: pleasure as such is blameworthy only when outweighed by a countervailing consideration, whether the loss of a benefit or the occurrence of harm. It is praiseworthy when it is itself an intended end or helps attain that end.
As for the other attribute, namely the absence of reason and discernment, this is never praiseworthy in itself. Neither the Book of Allah nor the Sunnah of His Messenger contains any praise or commendation of the absence of reason, discernment, or knowledge.
Rather, Allah has praised knowledge, reason, understanding, and the like in numerous passages, and condemned their absence in others.
