Neither approach is praiseworthy or enjoined, nor is either a path to Allah: the approach of the negligent, who engage in these necessary activities without making them acts of worship and means of drawing near to Allah, and the approach of those who overstep the bounds by abandoning these activities. Rather, what is prescribed is to perform them with the intention of drawing near to Allah and to give Him thanks.
Allah Most High says:
“Eat of the good things and do righteous deeds.”
Surah al-Mu’minūn, 51.
And He says:
“Eat of the good things We have provided for you, and give thanks to Allah.”
Surah al-Baqarah, 172.
He thus commands both eating and giving thanks. Whoever eats without giving thanks is blameworthy, and whoever does not eat and does not give thanks is blameworthy.
An authentic hadith reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah is indeed pleased with a servant who eats a meal and praises Him for it, or takes a drink and praises Him for it.”
