healing.’ I waited until he came out and supplicated for them, and they were healed. Then I followed in his footsteps, took hold of him and said, ‘I have an inward ailment. What is its cure?’ He replied, ‘O Sarī, let go of me, for He is jealous. Do not let Him see you finding repose in anyone other than Him, lest you fall from His regard.’”
This accords with His words, Most High:
“Do not set up another god alongside Allah, lest you sit condemned and forsaken.”
Surah al-Isrā’, 22
And His words:
“So do not invoke another god alongside Allah, lest you be among those punished.”
Surah al-Shu‘arā’, 213
And His words:
“Whoever associates partners with Allah is as though he had fallen from the sky and been snatched away by birds, or swept by the wind to a distant place.”
Surah al-Hajj, 31
And His words:
“It has certainly been revealed to you and to those before you: ‘If you associate partners with Allah, your deeds will surely come to nothing, and you will certainly be among the losers.’ Rather, worship Allah alone and be among the grateful.”
Surah al-Zumar, 65–66
And His words:
“That is Allah’s guidance, by which He guides whomever He wills of His servants. Had they associated partners with Him, all they did would have come to nothing.”
Surah al-An‘ām, 88
And His words:
“But Satan made him forget the remembrance of his lord, so he remained in prison for several years.”
Yūsuf, 42
