and they attribute jealousy to Allah concerning His making the one like the other. This may be true, even though revelation does not call it jealousy. For Allah, glorified be He, dislikes and hates that a servant should possess something he uses to disobey Allah rather than obey Him, or that what He has appointed for the believers should be found among the disbelievers and hypocrites. Likewise, believers should dislike this. Whatever Allah has forbidden and commanded the believers to prevent and remove is something He dislikes.

This is like His saying, exalted be He:

“I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant upon the earth without right.”
Sūrah al-Aʿrāf, 146

A group of the early generations explained: “I will prevent their hearts from understanding the Quran.”

This is what he related about al-Sarī: the following verse was recited in his presence:

“When you recite the Quran, We place between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter a hidden barrier.”
Sūrah al-Isrāʾ, 45

Al-Sarī then said to his companions: “Do you know what this barrier is? It is the barrier of jealousy, and no one is more jealous than Allah, exalted be He.”
