others. Rather, affirming Allah’s oneness, bearing witness to His unity, and believing in Him are complete only through faith in His messengers. Whoever regards belief in Allah’s angels, books, and messengers as something separate from belief in Him, and regards turning away from it as an expression of the jealousy so highly esteemed by the spiritual masters, has gone astray in his efforts while thinking that he is doing good. Whoever does not hold in his heart the testimony to messengership as an integral part of the testimony to Allah’s divinity is not a believer.
Concerning this, there is the hadith reported in both Sahīh collections from Asmā’, in which the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“It has been revealed to me that you will be tested in your graves with a trial like, and close to, the trial of the Dajjāl. A man will be approached in his grave and asked, ‘What do you know of this man who was sent among you?’ The believer—or the one who is certain—will say, ‘This is Muhammad, Allah’s servant and Messenger. He brought clear proofs and guidance, so we believed in him and followed him.’ But the hypocrite—or the one who doubts—will say, ‘Ah, ah! I do not know. I heard people saying something, so I said it too.’”
