“O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you! Would I feel protective jealousy towards you?” said ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb.
Likewise, the two Sahīh collections contain the hadith of Asmā’, who used to carry date stones for al-Zubayr. She said:
“I met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with a group of the Ansār. He called me over, then urged his camel to kneel so that I could ride behind him. But I felt shy about travelling with the men, and I remembered al-Zubayr and his protective jealousy, for he was the most jealous of men. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) realized that I felt shy, so he went on his way.
“I came to al-Zubayr and said, ‘The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) met me while I was carrying date stones on my head. A group of his Companions was with him, and he made his camel kneel so that I could ride. But I felt shy before him and remembered your protective jealousy.’ He said, ‘By Allah, your carrying the date stones was harder for me to bear than your riding with him.’”
She said: “Eventually, my father, Abu Bakr, sent me a servant who relieved me of tending the horse. It was as though he had set me free.”
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) thus stated:
“No one has greater protective jealousy than Allah.”
He also said:
“Allah’s protective jealousy is aroused when a believer does what He has forbidden him.”
This encompasses all forbidden acts.
