Al-IstiqamaIbn Taimiya

So when beauty, or anything else that offers a reason for love, is accompanied by something hateful—such as indecency, lying, injustice, or anything else mentioned in His words:

“Say, ‘My Lord has only forbidden indecencies—whether open or hidden—sin, unjust aggression, associating with Allah that for which He has sent down no authority, and saying about Allah what you do not know.’”
[Surah al-Aʿrāf 33]

then this entails the loss of what is far dearer to Allah than beauty, and incurs His loathing and hatred to a degree far greater than the love that beauty alone inspires. It also necessitates prohibiting whatever gives rise to these many evils and causes the loss of a higher beauty: perfection and goodness of character, together with the good deeds these entail. The hateful things involved, and the abandonment of things He loves, thus outweigh the love inspired by beauty.

The same principle applies to a person’s love of beautiful forms, looking at them, and the intensity and increase of love involved, which is called passionate love. If this is free of any outweighing harm—for example, a person’s moderate love for his wife or female slave, his love for something that involves no temptation, such as beautiful animals and clothes, or his moderate familial love for his child, father, mother, and the like, on account of some form of beauty—then this is good.
