And the same applies to everything else that Allah has forbidden or disliked despite its beauty. This is because it contains something hateful: what Allah hates in it outweighs what He loves in it, and it causes the loss of something dearer to Him.
Likewise, men and women may be beautiful in appearance, but if their character is evil—if they are wicked, openly disbelieving, or hypocritical—the hatred or loathing occasioned by their character and religion outweighs their beauty.
As He Most High says of the hypocrites:
“When you see them, their appearance impresses you.”
[Surah al-Munāfiqūn 4]
He also says:
“And among the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life.”
[Surah al-Baqarah 204]
What impressed him about these people was merely their outward appearance, visible to the eye, and their outward speech, audible to the ear, because of their appealing qualities. Yet the true nature of their character, which had a stronger hold over them, encompassed what was most hateful and loathsome to Allah. Thus, neither their pleasing appearance nor their fine words benefited them.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Allah does not look at your appearance or your wealth; rather, He looks at your hearts and your deeds.”
