Thus, if beauty entails the absence of something He loves more, or the presence of something He hates more, whatever is lovable in that beauty is thereby lost. If beautiful clothing involves insolence, boastfulness, conceit, and extravagance, He, glorified is He, does not love anyone who is conceited and boastful. He Most High says:
“And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor miserly.”
[Surah al-Furqān 67]
Rather, He hates the insolent, the boastful, the conceited, and the extravagant. He also says:
“Indeed, the extravagant will be the inhabitants of the Fire.”
[Surah Ghāfir 43]
For this reason, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will not look at anyone who drags his lower garment out of conceit and insolence.” He hates such a person and therefore will not look at him, even if there is beauty in his appearance, for that beauty is overwhelmed by the conceit and insolence that Allah hates.
Likewise, silk involves extravagance, boastfulness, and conceit that Allah hates, and it conflicts with the piety that Allah loves. As is authentically reported in the two Sahīh collections, the Prophet removed a silk tunic and said: “This is not fitting for the pious.”
