And in the Sunan, it is reported that he said to ʿAlī: “O ʿAlī, do not follow one glance with another. The first is allowed to you, but the second is not.”

Allah Most High said:

“Do not extend your eyes toward what We have given some groups of them to enjoy—the splendor of this worldly life—through which We test them. The provision of your Lord is better and more lasting.”
[Surah Tā Hā 131]

He also said:

“Do not extend your eyes toward what We have given some groups of them to enjoy, nor grieve over them, and lower your wing to the believers.”
[Surah al-Hijr 88]

And He said:

“Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire—women, children, accumulated treasures of gold and silver, fine horses, livestock, and cultivated land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but with Allah is the best return. Say, ‘Shall I inform you of something better than that? For those who fear Allah, there will be gardens with their Lord beneath which rivers flow, where they will abide forever, purified spouses, and approval from Allah. And Allah sees His servants.’”
[Surah Āl ʿImrān 13 15]

Yet, while condemning the blameworthy aspects of such adornment, He said:

“Say, ‘Who has forbidden the adornment Allah has brought forth for His servants and the good things He has provided?’ Say, ‘They are for those who believe during worldly life, and exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection.’”
[Surah al-Aʿrāf 32]
