Section on the Love of Beauty

It is established in Sahīh Muslim, on the authority of ‘Abd Allāh ibn Mas‘ūd, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“No one whose heart contains a mustard seed’s weight of faith will enter the Fire, and no one whose heart contains a mustard seed’s weight of arrogance will enter Paradise.”

In another narration:

“No one whose heart contains an atom’s weight of arrogance will enter Paradise.” A man said, “A man likes his clothes and shoes to be fine.” He replied, “Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down on people.”

His statement, “Allah is beautiful and loves beauty,” includes the fine clothing about which he was asked. It is thus clear that Allah loves beauty and beautiful clothing. Everything beautiful falls within the general scope of these words and is included, by implication, all the more so. This resembles his statement in the hadith narrated by al-Tirmidhī:

“Allah is pure and loves cleanliness.”
