al-Tamīmī say that he heard ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAlī say that he heard al-Husrī remark: ‘What use is listening that ends when the person being listened to stops? Your listening should be continuous and uninterrupted.’”
Al-Husrī also said: “There should be unceasing thirst and unceasing drinking: the more one drinks, the greater one’s thirst becomes.”
I say: These words criticize those who engage in this kind of listening and explain that a believer’s deeds are continuous, not intermittent. As the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “The deeds most beloved to Allah are those their doer maintains consistently.” Thus, the believer’s heart should remain constantly focused on the meanings of the Quran, without interruption—ever thirsty, ever seeking, ever drinking
