‘Come to me, come to me!’ They delight in the joy this brings. Then the veil falls, and that joy turns to weeping. Some tear their clothes, some cry out, and some weep, each according to his own measure.”
I say: This describes the state that overtakes them; it contains neither praise nor blame. Such a state may also occur among polytheists and the People of the Book, for they may witness things in their hearts and rejoice in them, whereupon love follows. Joy follows love: whoever loves something rejoices in its presence and suffers at its loss. Yet the object of love may be true or false.
Allah Most High says:
“Among people are those who take others besides Allah as equals, loving them as they love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in their love for Allah.”
[Surah al-Baqarah 165]
And He says:
“Because of their disbelief, their hearts were imbued with love of the calf.”
[Surah al-Baqarah 93]
A person may sincerely love Allah, yet the pleasing meanings he witnesses may be mere imaginings with no reality. He rejoices in them, but his joy is in something other than the truth, and that is blameworthy.
Allah Most High says:
“Then they will be asked, ‘Where are those you used to associate with Allah besides Him?’ They will say, ‘They have vanished from us. Indeed, we were not previously calling upon anything at all.’ Thus Allah leads the disbelievers astray. That is because you used to rejoice on earth without right, and because you used to revel.”
