And Allah said to Satan:
“Incite whoever you can among them with your voice.” [Surah al-Isrāʾ 64]
The satanic voice thus agitates the children of Adam. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “I have only forbidden two foolish, wicked voices.” He mentioned the voice raised in prosperity and the voice raised in disobedience, describing them as foolish and wicked—that is, marked by wrongdoing and ignorance.
Luqmān said to his son:
“Be moderate in your pace and lower your voice.” [Surah Luqmān 19]
Someone who sings in these voices has not lowered his voice, and those who move and dance to them have not been moderate in their pace. Rather, those raising their voices produce foolish, ignorant, wrongful and wicked sounds, while those moving perform foolish, ignorant and indecent movements. A person may even combine both kinds and regard this as one of the greatest acts of worship.
Then Abū al-Qāsim said: “I heard Shaykh Abū ʿAbd al-Rahmān al-Sulamī say: I heard Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz say: I heard Abū ʿAmr al-Anmātī say: I heard al-Junayd being asked, ‘Why is it that a person may be calm, but becomes agitated upon listening?’ He replied: ‘When Allah addressed the primordial progeny at the first covenant, saying, “Am I not your Lord?” [Surah al-Aʿrāf 172], the sweetness of hearing those words utterly absorbed their souls. So when they listen, the memory of that stirs them.’”
