Al-IstiqamaIbn Taimiya

so if he bears this patiently and fears Allah, the outcome will be in his favour, as Allah Most High says:

“But if you are patient and fear Allah, their plotting will not harm you at all.”
[Sūrah Āl ʿImrān 120]

And He says:

“You will surely be tested in your possessions and yourselves, and you will surely hear much hurtful speech from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah. But if you are patient and fear Allah—indeed, that is a matter requiring firm resolve.”
[Sūrah Āl ʿImrān 186]

Thus, He—glorified be He—commands patience in bearing the harm caused by the polytheists and the People of the Book, together with fear of Allah. This also points to the need for patience in bearing the harm believers cause one another, whether or not they are acting on an interpretation.

He—glorified be He—has also said:

“Do not let the hatred of a people lead you to be unjust. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.”
[Sūrah al-Māʾidah 8]

He thus forbids believers to let their hatred of the disbelievers lead them to treat them unjustly. What, then, if that hatred is directed towards a sinful believer or an innovator acting on an interpretation? All the more must a person not allow such hatred to lead him to treat a believer unjustly, even if that believer has wronged him.

This is a point of immense benefit in religious and worldly affairs. Satan is ever intent on the children of Adam and assails everyone. No one is free of such things, let alone other failings in fulfilling a command or committing a forbidden act, whether through scholarly judgment or otherwise, even when his position is correct.

He—glorified be He—said to His Prophet:

“So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is true. Ask forgiveness for your sin, and glorify your Lord with praise in the evening and the morning.”
[Sūrah Ghāfir 55]

He thus commanded him to be patient, informed him that Allah’s promise is true, and commanded him to ask forgiveness for his sin.
