and not for matters over which he has no choice. Even if his voice is ugly, he is not censured for that; he is censured only for his actions.
Allah has said concerning the hypocrites:
“When you see them, their appearance pleases you, and when they speak, you listen to their words.”
[Surah al-Munāfiqūn 4]
And He has said:
“Among people is one whose speech about worldly life pleases you, and who calls Allah to witness what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.”
[Surah al-Baqarah 204]
Allah censures only what the servant does by choice: raising his voice in an objectionable manner, as is found among harsh and coarse people. As the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Coarseness, harshness, and hardness of heart are found among the loud-voiced nomads.” These are people who shout in an objectionable manner.
Allah Most High has said:
“Be moderate in your pace and lower your voice.”
