And he said:
“Allah does not punish for the tears of the eyes or the sorrow of the heart, but He punishes—or shows mercy—on account of this,” and he pointed to his tongue.
He also said:
“If a woman who wails does not repent, she will be clothed on the Day of Resurrection in a gown of scabies and a garment of tar.”
These and other hadiths are found in the authentic hadith collections. For this reason, the scholars emphatically forbade innovations introduced into funerals, such as beating frame drums and the like. They considered it proper to cut up a frame drum at a funeral, as Ahmad and others explicitly stated. This differs from using a frame drum at a wedding, which is prescribed.
As for battle, the Sunnah likewise calls for lowering the voice. Thus Himās ibn Qays ibn Khālid said to his wife on the day of the conquest of Mecca:
“… Had you witnessed the day of al-Khandama,
when Safwān fled, and Ikrima fled,
and Abū Yazīd stood like a bereaved mother,
while the Muslims met them with swords,
cleaving every forearm and skull—
blows amid which only muffled sounds were heard;
behind us came their low growls and murmurs—
you would not have uttered a single word of blame. …”
