Both Sahih collections also record that he said:
“There are three qualities which, if present in a person, mean that he has tasted the sweetness of faith.” In another wording: “No one tastes the sweetness of faith unless he possesses three qualities: that Allah and His Messenger are more beloved to him than anything else; that he loves a person solely for Allah’s sake; and that he hates to return to disbelief after Allah has saved him from it just as he hates to be cast into the Fire.”
Allah Most High has said:
“Say, ‘If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your spouses, your relatives, the wealth you have acquired, the trade whose decline you fear, and the homes you cherish are more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger and striving in His cause, then wait until Allah brings about His command.’”
He was not satisfied that their love for Allah and His Messenger should merely equal their love for family and wealth, or that their love for striving in His cause should merely equal their love for family and wealth. Rather, striving in His cause—which brings their love for Him and His Messenger to completion—must be more beloved to them than family and wealth.
This requires that their love for Allah and His Messenger take precedence over every other love: unlike the polytheists, there must be nothing they love as they love Allah.
