Allah Most High says:

“Have you seen the one who takes his own desire as his god? Would you then be a guardian over him?”
[Sūrah al-Furqān 43]

He also says:

“But if they do not respond to you, then know that they only follow their desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his own desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.”
[Sūrah al-Qasas 50]

He also says:

“Indeed, many lead others astray through their desires without knowledge. Surely your Lord knows best those who transgress.”
[Sūrah al-An‘ām 119]

He also says:

“Never will the Jews or the Christians be pleased with you until you follow their religion. Say, ‘Indeed, Allah’s guidance is the true guidance.’ If you were to follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you would have neither a protector nor a helper against Allah.”
[Sūrah al-Baqarah 120]

He also says:

“Say, ‘O People of the Book, do not go beyond the bounds of truth in your religion, and do not follow the desires of a people who went astray before, led many astray, and strayed from the right path.’”
[Sūrah al-Mā’idah 77]

Those who practise samā‘ (spiritual listening) are often afflicted with an aspect of the Christians’ condition: excess in religion and following the desires of people who went astray before. Although some among them possess virtue and righteousness, in the practices they have introduced as religious innovations they have strayed from Allah’s path. They think that this innovation guides them to the love of Allah, yet it actually bars them from His path. For they have turned away from Allah’s reminder—His Book—from listening to it, reflecting upon it, and following it.
