We say, then: At the root of what is forbidden in this matter is transgression, for man is unjust and ignorant. Allah Most High says:
“Mankind was one community. Then Allah sent the prophets as bearers of good tidings and warners, and sent down with them the Scripture in truth to judge between people concerning their differences. Yet none differed over it except those who had been given it, after clear proofs had come to them, out of transgression against one another.” [Sūrat al-Baqarah 213]
He makes this point in more than one passage.
It is established in the two Sahīh collections that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “You will surely follow the ways of those before you, as closely as one arrow feather matches another, so that even if they entered a lizard’s burrow, you would enter it too.” They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, the Jews and the Christians?” He replied, “Who else?”
Allah Most High also says:
“Do not be like those who became divided and differed after clear proofs had come to them. For them there will be a tremendous punishment.” [Sūrat Āl ʿImrān 105]
