Then Allah Most High says:
“Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book in truth. Whoever is guided, it is for his own benefit; and whoever goes astray, it is only to his own detriment. You are not a guardian over them.” [Surah al-Zumar 41]
He thus states that He sent down the speech—that is, the Book—in truth; that a person’s guidance benefits him, while his misguidance harms him; and that the Messenger is not a guardian over them who records their deeds and recompenses them for them. Rather, to Allah is their return, and with Allah rests their reckoning.
Then He says, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of Allah’s mercy,” continuing to His words:
“And follow the best of what has been sent down to you from your Lord.” [Surah al-Zumar 53–55]
The “best” here is the same “best” mentioned in His words:
“Those who listen to what is said and follow the best of it.” [Surah al-Zumar 18]
And in His words to Moses concerning the Torah:
“Hold firmly to it, and command your people to follow the best of it.” [Surah al-A‘raf 145]
We shall discuss this, Allah willing.
Then He says, “Those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in groups. When they reach it, its gates will be opened, and its keepers will say to them, ‘Did messengers from among yourselves not come to you, reciting your Lord’s verses to you and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?’ They will say, ‘Yes,’” continuing to His words:
“Those who feared their Lord will be led to Paradise in groups,”
and then to His words:
“They will say, ‘Praise be to Allah, who has fulfilled His promise to us and made us inherit the land, so that we may settle in Paradise wherever we wish.’ How excellent is the reward of those who work!” [Surah al-Zumar 71–74]
Alongside this are His words:
“The prophets and the witnesses will be brought forth.” [Surah al-Zumar 69]
