And Allah Most High says:
“When you see those who engage in offensive discourse concerning Our verses, turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain with the wrongdoing people once you remember. Those who fear Allah bear no responsibility for their account, but are to remind them, so that they may fear Him.” [Surah al-Anʿām 68–69]
He, glorified be He, has thus commanded turning away from the speech of those who engage in offensive discourse concerning His verses and forbidden sitting with them. How, then, can listening to every kind of speech be praiseworthy?
Allah Most High says:
“He has already revealed to you in the Book that when you hear Allah’s verses being denied and ridiculed, you must not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Otherwise, you would be like them.” [Surah al-Nisāʾ 140]
Allah has thus deemed the listener to such speech like the one who utters it. How, then, can every listener to every kind of speech be praised?
Allah Most High says:
“Successful indeed are the believers: those who are humble in their prayers and who turn away from idle talk.” [Surah al-Muʾminūn 1–3]
Allah Most High says:
“The servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk humbly upon the earth, and when the ignorant address them, they say words of peace,” up to His words: “And when they pass by idle talk, they pass by with dignity.” [Surah al-Furqān 63–72]
It is reported that Ibn Masʿūd heard the sound of amusement and turned away from it. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then said: “Ibn Masʿūd was indeed noble.”
