speaks in support of what they associate with Him?”
[Surah al-Rūm 35]
And it is said:
“They are nothing but names you and your forefathers have named, for which Allah has sent down no authority.”
[Surah al-Najm 23]
This is stated in several places.
Allah Most High also says:
“Indeed, it is out of their falsehood that they say, ‘Allah has begotten,’”
through to His words:
“Or do you have clear authority? Then bring your scripture, if you are truthful.”
[Surah al-Sāffāt 151–157]
He also says:
“Or do they have a stairway by which they listen? Then let their listener bring an authority.”
[Surah al-Tūr 38]
And He says:
“Shall We then treat those who submit like the criminals? What is the matter with you? How do you judge? Or do you have a scripture in which you study?”
[Surah al-Qalam 35–37]
Since this is so, it is clear that no one may oppose Allah’s Book with anything other than a revealed book. Whoever opposes Allah’s Book and disputes concerning it on the basis of what he calls rational arguments, demonstrations, and analogies, or what he calls unveilings, inward experiences, and spiritual tastes, without producing a revealed book to support what he says, has disputed concerning Allah’s signs without authority. This is the condition of the disbelievers of whom He said:
“None dispute concerning Allah’s signs except those who disbelieve.”
[Surah Ghāfir 4]
Such, then, is the general condition of those who dispute concerning Allah’s signs.
It is well known that whoever disputes concerning all of Allah’s signs does not dispute on the basis of any authority.
