Al-IstiqamaIbn Taimiya

as He says in the other verse:

“Indeed, those who dispute concerning Allah’s signs without any authority having come to them have nothing in their hearts but a desire for greatness which they will never attain. So seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.”
[Surah Ghāfir 56]

Hence He says of these disputants:

“Greatly hateful is this in the sight of Allah and those who believe.”
[Surah Ghāfir 35]

That is, great is the hatred directed at them; or great is this hatred; or greatly hateful is this disputation or this action—that is, greatly hated. Likewise, Allah Most High says:

“Grave is the word that comes out of their mouths.”
[Surah al-Kahf 5]

And Allah Most High says:

“What an evil exchange for the wrongdoers!”
[Surah al-Kahf 50]

In constructions of this kind, the person or thing singled out for praise or blame is often left implicit when its antecedent has already been mentioned. In an expression of praise, the man is the intended referent, as when you say: “What an excellent man Zayd is!”; “What an excellent man he is!”; and “Zayd—what an excellent man he is!”

The word “hatred” may mean hatred itself, or it may mean the object of hatred, just as “creation” and similar words may have either sense. Another example is His saying:

“Why do you say what you do not do? Greatly hateful is it in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do.”
[Surah al-Saff 23]

That is, it is greatly hated: the hatred directed at it is indeed great.

Such hatred is intense, and is a kind of anger appropriate to the condition of
