Allah—Mighty and Majestic—cursed the woman who attaches hair extensions and the woman who has them attached, and the tattooist and the woman who has herself tattooed.” In another wording narrated by al-Bukhārī: “Allah cursed the woman who attaches hair extensions . . .”
Indeed, this addition occurs in the hadith of Ibn Mas‘ūd—may Allah be pleased with him—as narrated by Masrūq:
“A woman came to Ibn Mas‘ūd and said, ‘I have been informed that you forbid attaching hair extensions.’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ She asked, ‘Is that something you find in Allah’s Book, or did you hear it from the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him?’ He replied, ‘I find it in Allah’s Book and from the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him.’ She said, ‘By Allah, I have searched the Quran from cover to cover, but I did not find what you say in it!’ He asked, ‘Did you find in it: (Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it)?’ She replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—forbid the woman who plucks facial hair, the tattooist, the woman who attaches hair extensions, and the tattooist, except when necessitated by illness.’ The woman said, ‘Perhaps some of your wives do so.’ He told her, ‘Go in.’ She entered and then came out, saying, ‘I saw nothing amiss.’ He replied, ‘In that case, I would not have upheld the counsel of the righteous servant: (I do not wish to do, in opposition to you, what I forbid you to do).’”
It was narrated by al-Nasā’ī (2/281) and Ahmad (1/415–416), whose wording this is. Its chain of transmission is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.
It is also corroborated by a report from Abū Rayhānah—Shim‘ūn al-Ansārī—who said: “It has reached us that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—forbade filing the teeth and tattooing.”
It was narrated by al-Nasā’ī (2/282) with an authentic chain of transmission. It is a report in which a Companion omitted his immediate source, and such a report is authoritative evidence.
