92—(A man once asked Ibn ‘Umar, “What kind of clothing should I wear?” He replied: “Something in which fools will not look down on you—meaning because of its shabbiness and unsightly appearance—and for which the wise will not fault you.” Narrated by al-Tabarānī.) p. 86
Good. Al-Tabarānī narrated it in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabīr (2/188/3): Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullāh al-Hadramī narrated to us: ‘Uthmān ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Yūnus ibn Abī Ya‘fūr narrated to us from his father, who said: “I heard Ibn ‘Umar when a man asked him…” He then related the hadith and added: “The man asked, ‘What would that be?’ He replied, ‘Anything between five and twenty dirhams.’”
I say: This chain of transmission is good, Allah Most High willing. Its narrators are trustworthy and among those from whom Muslim narrated, except al-Hadramī, who was a trustworthy hadith master. Yūnus ibn Abī Ya‘fūr, however, had some weakness. Al-Dhahabī said in al-Mīzān: “Ibn Ma‘īn, al-Nasā’ī, and Ahmad deemed him weak. Abū Hātim said, ‘He was truthful,’ while another scholar said, ‘His hadith are acceptable.’ Muslim also narrated from him.” Al-Hāfiz, however, said in al-Taqrīb: “He made many mistakes.”
Regarding this hadith, al-Haythamī said in al-Majma‘ (5/135):
“Al-Tabarānī narrated it, and its narrators are among the narrators of the Sahih.”
(Note) The book reads “the wise,” but the correct wording is “people of forbearance,” as found in both of the aforementioned sources, al-Mu‘jam and al-Majma‘.
93—(The Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him—“cursed the tattooist and the woman who has herself tattooed, the woman who files teeth and the woman who has her teeth filed.” Narrated by Muslim.) p. 86
Authentic. However, the words “the woman who files teeth and the woman who has her teeth filed” are not found in Muslim’s version. Muslim (6/166), as well as al-Bukhārī (4/102), narrated it from ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of
