Authentic. It is narrated from ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar—may Allah be pleased with them both. Al-Bukhārī (4/72–73), Muslim (6/146–147), Abū Dāwūd (4085), al-Nasā’ī (2/299), al-Tirmidhī (1/323), Ibn Mājah (3569), Mālik (2/9/914), and Ahmad (2/5, 10, 42, 44, 46, 55, 56, 60, 65, 67, 69–70, 74, 76, 81) narrated it through numerous chains from Ibn ‘Umar with the same wording. Al-Tirmidhī said: “It is a good, authentic hadith.” Al-Bukhārī, al-Nasā’ī, and Ahmad added in one of their narrations:
“Abū Bakr said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, one side of my lower garment hangs loose unless I keep attending to it.’ The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—replied: ‘You are not one of those who do so out of pride.’”
Ahmad added in a narration through Nāfi‘, who said: “Sulaymān ibn Yasār informed me that Umm Salamah raised the matter of women. He said: ‘Let them lower it by a handspan.’ She said: ‘Then they will be exposed.’ He replied: ‘Then by a cubit, but they must not exceed that.’” Al-Tirmidhī also narrated this version and said:
“It is a good, authentic hadith.”
The hadith also has a corroborating report from Abū Hurayrah, narrated from him through several chains by al-Bukhārī and Muslim, Ahmad (2/386, 397, 409, 430, 454, 466–467, 479), and others.
91—(And in the hadith: “Whoever wears a garment to attract attention, Allah will clothe him in a garment of humiliation on the Day of Resurrection.” Narrated by Ahmad, Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasā’ī, and Ibn Mājah, and the narrators in its chain are trustworthy.) p. 85
