75 - (A man came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) wearing a poor-quality garment. He asked him, “Do you have wealth?” He replied, “Yes.” He asked, “What kind of wealth?” He replied, “Allah Most High has granted me wealth of every kind.” He said, “When Allah grants you wealth, let the signs of Allah’s blessing and generosity toward you be visible.” Al-Nasā’ī). p. 80
Authentic. It was narrated by al-Nasā’ī (2/291, 296), as well as Abū Dāwūd (4063), al-Hākim (4/181), Ahmad (3/473), Ibn Sa‘d (6/28), and al-Harbī in Gharīb al-Hadīth (5/1-2), through several routes from Abū Ishāq, from Abū al-Ahwas, from his father:
“He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wearing a poor-quality garment. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, ‘Do you have wealth?’....”
Al-Hākim said, “Its chain of transmission is authentic,” and al-Dhahabī concurred. It is indeed as he stated. Although Abū Ishāq—whose name was ‘Amr ibn ‘Abd Allāh al-Sabī‘ī—experienced memory deterioration and practiced concealment in transmission, in al-Hākim’s narration, as well as in one of Ahmad’s narrations through Shu‘bah from him, he said, “I heard Abū al-Ahwas....” He thus explicitly affirmed direct hearing, removing any concern arising from his concealment. Moreover, Shu‘bah heard from him before his memory deteriorated, so his narration was unaffected by it. Furthermore, he was not alone in narrating it: ‘Abd al-Malik ibn ‘Umayr corroborated him, narrating it from Abū al-Ahwas with the following wording:
“His father came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with disheveled hair and an unsightly appearance. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, ‘Do you not have wealth?’ He replied, ‘Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has granted me wealth of every kind.’ He said, ‘When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, bestows a blessing upon a servant, He loves its signs to be visible upon him.’”
It was narrated by Ahmad (3/473-474), and its chain of transmission is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.
It also has a corroborating report from ‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah loves the signs of His blessing to be visible upon His servant.”
