al-Tabarānī in al-Mujam al-Kabīr; therefore, I do not know whether it is a scribal corruption of “(Ts),” meaning al-Mujam al-Awsat, or not.
This additional phrase has a basis in another hadith, worded: “Modesty is part of faith, and faith is in Paradise…” It is authentic and is referenced in Silsilat al-Ahādīth al-Sahīhah (491).
73 - (A man came to the Prophet with disheveled hair and beard. The Messenger gestured to him as though instructing him to groom his hair. He did so and then returned, whereupon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Is this not better than one of you coming with disheveled hair as though he were a devil?” Mālik in al-Muwatta). p. 80
Weak in this wording. Mālik narrated it in al-Muwatta (7/949/2), through Atā ibn Yasār, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the mosque when a man entered with disheveled hair and beard…”
I say: Its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, but it is disconnected, and is therefore weak.
The following hadith suffices in its place.
74 - (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man whose hair was unkempt and said: “Could this man not find something with which to groom his hair?” He then saw another man wearing dirty clothes and said: “Could this man not find something with which to wash his garment?” Abū Dāwūd). p. 80
Authentic. It is referenced in Silsilat al-Ahādīth al-Sahīhah, no. (489).
