293, 399), and by Abū Dāwūd (3873), al-Tirmidhī (2/4), and likewise Ibn Mājah (3500), from Wāil al-Hadramī, who reported that Tāriq ibn Suwayd al-Jufī asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) … and he cited the hadith. Al-Tirmidhī said, “A sound, authentic hadith.”

Weak. It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (3874) and al-Daylamī in Musnad al-Firdaws (1/2/221), through Ismāīl ibn Ayyāsh, from Thalabah ibn Muslim, from Abū Imrān al-Ansārī, from Umm al-Dardā, from Abū al-Dardā, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said—and he cited the hadith.
I say: This chain of transmission is weak. Thalabah ibn Muslim is al-Khathamī al-Shāmī. Al-Hāfiz said, “He is of unknown standing.” Al-Dhahabī said in al-Mīzān: “Thalabah ibn Muslim al-Khathamī narrated from Ubayy ibn Kab, and Ismāīl ibn Ayyāsh narrated from him an objectionable report.” He meant this report. However, the words “Ubayy ibn Kab” are an error, which I believe was made by the copyist. The man was not one of the Successors, such that he could have narrated from the Companions; indeed, he did not meet them at all. This is indicated by Ibn Hibbān’s listing him in the fourth tier of al-Thiqāt, as cited in al-Tahdhīb. I therefore believe that “Ubayy ibn Kab” is a corruption of “Ayyūb ibn Bashīr,” for the latter was one of his teachers. Allah knows best.
Al-Munāwī attributed the weakness of the hadith in Fayd al-Qadīr to Ibn Ayyāsh, saying:
“Al-Sadr al-Munāwī said: Its chain contains Ismāīl ibn Ayyāsh, whose reliability has been disputed.”
I say: This criticism applies only to his transmission from the people of the Hijaz and others. As for his transmission from the people of Syria, his narrations from them are sound, as al-Bukhārī, Ibn Maīn, and others stated. The defect therefore lies with his teacher, as we have explained.
