Al-Haythamī said in al-Majma (4/88), “Its chain of transmission is connected and good.”
That is what he said. Shahr ibn Hawshab, however, is weak due to his poor memory. Al-Hāfiz said in al-Taqrīb, “Truthful, but he frequently transmits reports with missing links and makes errors.”
The authentic report is the hadith of Ibn Abbās, who said:
“A man presented the Messenger of Allah—Mighty and Majestic is He—with a large wineskin of wine. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, ‘Did you know that Allah has forbidden it?’ He replied, ‘No.’ He then whispered to another man. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, ‘What did you whisper to him?’ He replied, ‘I told him to sell it.’ He said, ‘The One who forbade drinking it has also forbidden selling it.’ The man then opened the wineskin and let all its contents drain away.”
It was recorded by Muslim (5/40).
64 - (Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day must not sit at a table where wine is being served.” Narrated by Ahmad, and its meaning is also found in al-Tirmidhī.) p. 73
Authentic. Its full documentation appears in al-Irwā.
65 - (Regarding the Messenger’s response on this matter: a man asked him about wine, and he forbade it. The man said, “I only make it for medicinal purposes!” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “It is not medicine; rather, it is a disease.” Narrated by Muslim, Ahmad, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Tirmidhī.) p. 74
Authentic. It was recorded by Muslim (6/89) and Ahmad (4/311, 317, 5/292)—
