“Abu Hātim ibn Hibbān said: ‘This hadith has no basis as a report of al-Husayn ibn Wāqid. Al-Hasan should therefore be removed from the ranks of upright narrators for having narrated this rejected report.’”
Ibn Abī Hātim said in al-Ilal (1/389/1165):
“I asked my father about this hadith. He replied: ‘It is a lie and utterly false.’ I asked: ‘Do you know this Abd al-Karīm?’ He replied: ‘No.’ I asked: ‘Do you know al-Hasan ibn Muslim?’ He replied: ‘No, but their narration indicates mendacity.’”
I say: This Abd al-Karīm is among the men mentioned by al-Sahmī in his History. He described him as:
“…the cloth merchant of Jurjān, known as ‘Abdak. The Khān Abdak at the Khandaq Gate is named after him. He narrated from Umar ibn Hārūn, al-Hasan ibn Muslim, and others. Muhammad ibn Bandār al-Sabbāk and Abd Allah ibn Mahdī narrated from him.”
He then cited two hadiths of his, this being one of them, but mentioned neither criticism nor commendation concerning him.
A biographical entry for him also appears in Lisān al-Mīzān, which states:
“In Ibn Hibbān’s al-Thiqāt: Abd al-Karīm ibn Abd al-Karīm al-Bajalī narrated from Abd Allah ibn Umar, and Jabbārah ibn al-Mughallis narrated from him. His hadith are sound.”
It therefore appears that he is the same man. What I have quoted from al-Sahmī escaped the attention of al-Hāfiz, for he did not mention it in his Lisān, just as al-Dhahabī did not mention it in his Mīzān. I therefore wished to reproduce it here for its benefit.
63 – (It has been narrated that a man wished to present the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a wineskin filled with wine. The Prophet informed him that Allah had forbidden it. The man asked:
“May I not sell it?”
The Prophet replied: “The One who forbade drinking it also forbade selling it.”
