60 – (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed ten people involved with wine: the one who presses it; the one who has it pressed—that is, the one who asks for it to be pressed; the one who drinks it; the one who carries it; the one to whom it is carried; the one who serves it; the one who sells it; the one who consumes its proceeds; the one who buys it; and the one for whom it is bought. Narrated by al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Mājah; its narrators are trustworthy.) p. 72
Authentic. Al-Tirmidhī (1/243) and Ibn Mājah (3381) narrated it through Abū ʿĀsim, from Shabīb ibn Bishr, from Anas ibn Mālik, who then related the report. Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a singular hadith as transmitted from Anas. Reports to this effect have also been narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās, Ibn Masʿūd, and Ibn ʿUmar, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).”
I say: The compiler’s statement, “Its narrators are trustworthy,” was taken from al-Mundhirī in al-Targhīb. This unqualified assertion is open to question, for scholarly opinion regarding this Shabīb is divided. Ibn Maʿīn said, “Trustworthy.” Abū Hātim said, “Somewhat weak in hadith.” Ibn Hibbān included him in al-Thiqāt and said, “He makes frequent mistakes.” Al-Hāfiz said in al-Taqrīb: “Truthful, but makes mistakes.” I say: A narrator of his standing may perhaps have his hadith graded sound, but not authentic.
The hadith is nevertheless authentic because of the corroborating reports to which al-Tirmidhī referred. Among them is the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, which has three routes that I traced in al-Irwāʾ (1529).
Al-Tabarānī narrated the hadith of Ibn Masʿūd in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (3/62/1).
61 – (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah has forbidden wine. Whoever is reached by this verse while possessing any of it must neither drink it nor sell it.” The narrator of the hadith said: “The people then brought whatever wine they had out into the streets of Medina and poured it away.” Narrated by Muslim.) p. 72
Authentic. Muslim narrated it (5/39–40) from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said:
