50 – (The hadith narrated by Ahmad: “Do not eat any game struck by a pellet unless you slaughter it.”) p. 66
Weak. Ahmad (4/380) recorded it through Ibrāhīm, from ʿAdī ibn Hātim, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“When you release your dog and invoke Allah’s name, but it mingles with other dogs and they all catch the quarry, do not eat it, for you do not know which one caught it. If you shoot and invoke Allah’s name, and your shot pierces the quarry, then eat it; but if it does not pierce it, do not eat it. Do not eat anything struck by a miʿrād (hunting shaft) unless you slaughter it, and do not eat anything struck by a pellet unless you slaughter it.”
I say: Its chain is weak. Its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators of the two Shaykhs, al-Bukhārī and Muslim, but the chain is disconnected between Ibrāhīm—namely, Ibn Yazīd al-Nakhaʿī—and ʿAdī. Ahmad provided a connected chain for it in another narration, from Ibrāhīm, from Hammām ibn al-Hārith, from ʿAdī, in abridged form. It does not contain the portion relevant here. Muslim (6/56) likewise recorded it.
51 – (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade khadhf—shooting a pebble or the like—and said: “It neither brings down game nor injures an enemy; rather, it breaks a tooth and puts out an eye.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī and Muslim.) p. 66
Authentic. Al-Bukhārī (4/5–6), Muslim (6/71), as well as Abū Dāwūd (5270), al-Nasāʾī (2/248), al-Dārimī (1/117), Ibn Mājah (no. 17), and Ahmad (5/56) recorded it from ʿAbd Allah ibn Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him), who then related the report.
52 – (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If you release the dog and it eats from the game, do not eat it, for it has caught it for itself. But if you release it and it kills without eating, then eat it, for it has caught it for its master.” Narrated by Ahmad, with a similar report in the two Sahihs.) p. 67
